Water Conservation through Rain Water Harvesting – Awala-Mahuli-Katekui Check Dam at Shahapur, Thane district Maharashtra a CSR Project by ECGC Limited
Welcome to our exploration of the Awala-Mahuli-Katekui Check Dam, a marvel of engineering nestled in the heart of nature. The place is just on the back side of the Mahuligad foothills. Mahuli is an area of the Indian state of Maharashtra, covering about 6km. It is approximately 75km north-east of Mumbai. The nature is so pleasant here that we must visit this place to see the natural beauty.
This Water project is going to get benefits the 5 villages as Katekui, Mahuli, Katodepada, Vagedapada,& Junagaonpada in Shahapur Taluka, Thane District. All the villages are around 14 Km. away from the nearest Asangaon Railway Station and Kalyan city is around 45 km from this place. All communities here belong to scheduled tribes. This particular village is around 2-3 km away from all other villages.
Water scarcity is a pressing issue in this area like many villages of Maharashtra, which is leading to agricultural challenges and a shortage of drinking water and sanitation facilities. As a solution this structure isn’t just a dam, it’s a lifeline for local communities, transforming the landscape and supporting biodiversity.
On 6th May 2025 NGO started the work with the Bhoomi Pujan Ceremony. The Check Dam construction will be built across a stream and it will be used to interrupt and store water for special purposes. The Check Dam Water project is 7 feet deep and 21feet long, which is prioritized on the following parameters:
- The ground water status in the area,
- Drinking water situation in the area,
- Productivity potential of the land etc
On World Environment Day’ 5th June 2025, NGO inaugurated the event of handing over the CSR supported Project of Rain Water Harvesting – Awala-Mahuli- Katekui Check Dam, to
Villagers. With the enthusiastic participation of our NGO team, a few village residents, and children, on 13th June over 200 Fruit-bearing and native saplings were planted around Check Dam.
